Profusion Crabapple

Profusion Crabapple is a showy deciduous ornamental tree known for abundant deep pink spring flowers, purple-bronze new foliage, and small red crabapples. Its rounded, spreading habit brings dramatic color, seasonal texture, and classic flowering-tree appeal to sunny residential landscapes.

Why choose Profusion Crabapple?

Choose Profusion Crabapple for a bold combination of spring bloom, colorful foliage, and ornamental fruit. This classic flowering crabapple opens from reddish buds into masses of rich pink to reddish-pink flowers, followed by bronze-purple young leaves that mature to green-bronze tones. Small red fruits add late-season detail and may attract birds. Its graceful rounded canopy works beautifully as a lawn specimen, entry accent, or flowering focal point in larger mixed borders.

Key Characteristics

Botanical Name: Malus × moerlandsii ‘Profusion’
Common Name: Profusion Crabapple
Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental tree
Growth Habit: Rounded to spreading flowering tree with a broad, graceful canopy

Profusion Crabapple Additional Information

Profusion Crabapple offers a lively sequence of multi-season color. In spring, reddish flower buds open into abundant deep pink to reddish-pink blooms that cover the branches and provide nectar for visiting pollinators. New leaves emerge with purple to bronze coloring, then mature to green-bronze through summer, giving the tree ornamental value beyond its bloom period.

Small red crabapples develop later in the season and add decorative interest into fall, with birds often visiting the fruit. As a deciduous tree, Profusion Crabapple drops its leaves in autumn and shows an attractive branching structure through winter. It is best used where it has room to develop its naturally rounded crown, such as open lawns, sunny borders, park-like landscapes, and prominent front-yard planting areas. Pruning is usually light and focused on removing damaged, crossing, or crowded branches to support airflow and structure.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant Profusion Crabapple in full sun with moist, well-drained soil and good air movement. Set the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding grade, then backfill with native soil and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods, especially in hot, exposed, or sandy planting sites.

3. Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk and root flare.

4. Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches. Maintain an open canopy for sunlight and airflow while preserving the tree’s naturally rounded form.
