Purple Bloomerang Lilac

Purple Bloomerang Lilac is a reblooming deciduous lilac with fragrant lavender-purple flowers in spring and repeat blooms from summer into fall. Its compact rounded habit, classic lilac scent, and extended bloom season make it excellent for sunny borders, foundations, containers, and cutting gardens.

Why choose Purple Bloomerang Lilac?

Choose Purple Bloomerang Lilac for its repeat flowering and compact landscape size. Unlike traditional lilacs that bloom mainly in spring, this variety flowers heavily in spring, pauses for new growth, then reblooms later in the season. Sweetly fragrant purple blooms attract butterflies and make lovely cut stems, while the tidy mounded form fits smaller gardens better than many older lilac shrubs. It is a strong choice for patios, entry plantings, mixed shrub borders, and sunny cottage-style landscapes.

Key Characteristics

Botanical Name: Syringa x ‘Penda’
Common Name: Purple Bloomerang Lilac, Bloomerang Purple Reblooming Lilac
Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub
Growth Habit: Compact, rounded, mounded shrub

Purple Bloomerang Lilac Additional Information

Purple Bloomerang Lilac produces fragrant lavender-purple flower clusters in mid to late spring, then reblooms on new growth from midsummer into fall when growing conditions are favorable. The individual flowers have a classic lilac look and scent, making this shrub especially useful near walkways, patios, windows, and cutting gardens where the fragrance can be enjoyed up close.

This shrub has green foliage through the growing season and drops its leaves in fall. It blooms on both old and new wood, so pruning should be light and timed just after the spring bloom if shaping is needed. Purple Bloomerang Lilac works well as a specimen shrub, low informal hedge, foundation accent, container thriller, mixed border plant, or fragrant pollinator planting. It performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and appreciates good air circulation.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant Purple Bloomerang Lilac in full sun with well-drained soil. Choose a site with good air movement and enough room for its rounded mature shape, then set the root ball level with the surrounding soil and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once established, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods, especially during summer heat or while the plant is forming repeat blooms.

3. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if soil fertility is low. A light follow-up feeding after the first bloom can help support reblooming in productive garden soil.

4. Pruning: Prune lightly right after the spring flower display. Remove spent blooms and any damaged or crossing stems, but avoid heavy late-season pruning so the shrub can maintain strong flowering potential.
