Fragrant white flowers appear in dense, spherical, long-stalked flower heads in early to mid-summer. Long, projecting styles give the flower heads a distinctively pincushion-like appearance. Flower heads are very attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insect pollinators. Flower heads mature into hard spherical ball-like fruits consisting of multiple tiny two-seeded nutlets. Fruiting heads usually persist throughout the winter. Ovate to elliptic glossy bright green leaves are in pairs or whorls. Buttonbush is quite happy in moist conditions, tolerating flooding and wet spring soil. As such it is often used in wetland restoration work, along streams and pond banks. It’s an ideal choice for low areas in the landscape that stay moist. Conversely, it grows well without excessive moisture. If you are not satisfied within the first 5 days of the planting of your shrub give us a call so we can make it right. Shrubs and plants are living organisms and require care, maintenance and protection in order to survive, root in and establish properly. Shrubs that do not survive despite receiving the proper care, maintenance and protection within the first year will be considered for a one-time replacement.
