First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow
First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow is a compact native willow shrub prized for soft silvery foliage, spring catkins, and refined texture. Its cool-toned leaves and manageable habit bring standout contrast to rain gardens, moist borders, pond edges, foundation beds, and naturalized landscape plantings.
Why choose First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow?
Choose First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow for bright silver foliage in a smaller, more garden-friendly willow form. This selection offers the rugged beauty of sageleaf willow with a compact habit that fits more easily into residential landscapes. The soft, narrow leaves add movement and contrast beside darker shrubs, evergreens, perennials, and ornamental grasses. It is especially useful in moist sites where its native character, early catkins, and cool foliage color can bring natural texture without the scale of a large willow tree.
Key Characteristics
- Botanical Name: Salix candida ‘Jefberg’
- Common Name: First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow
- Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub
- Growth Habit: Compact, rounded to upright shrub with fine-textured branching
First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow Additional Information
First Editions Iceberg Alley Sageleaf Willow stands out for its silvery, sage-like foliage, which gives the shrub a soft, luminous look from spring through fall. In early spring, fuzzy catkins appear along the stems, adding subtle bloom interest and seasonal texture before the leaves fully expand. The foliage is narrow and softly colored, making it especially attractive when paired with deep green, burgundy, blue, or purple-leaved plants.
This deciduous shrub drops its leaves after the growing season and returns with fresh growth in spring. It is well suited for rain gardens, moist borders, pond margins, naturalized beds, and mixed shrub plantings where consistent moisture is available. Light pruning after bloom or in early spring can help maintain a tidy shape, remove older stems, and encourage fresh, colorful growth. Allow its natural form to remain slightly loose for the best foliage texture and movement.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location in full sun with soil that retains moisture reasonably well. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container and provide room for mature development.
2. Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once rooted, maintain consistent moisture during prolonged dry periods to support healthy foliage and growth.
3. Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to help conserve soil moisture and moderate temperature fluctuations.
4. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged stems and maintain a tidy shape. Extensive pruning is typically unnecessary due to its naturally compact habit.
