Hakura Nishiki Willow

Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form is a showy deciduous ornamental willow prized for pink new growth, dappled white-and-green foliage, and a rounded canopy displayed on a graceful standard trunk for colorful specimen appeal.

Why choose Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form?

Choose Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form when you want a compact ornamental tree with season-long foliage interest rather than relying on flowers alone. Its new leaves emerge with soft pink tones before maturing to a bright blend of creamy white and green. The tree-form habit gives this colorful willow a polished, architectural look that works beautifully near entries, patios, walkways, mixed borders, and container displays where its variegated canopy can be enjoyed up close.

Key Characteristics

Botanical Name: Salix integra ‘Hakuro-nishiki’
Common Name: Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form
Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental tree
Growth Habit: Grafted standard tree form with a rounded, lightly arching canopy

Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form Additional Information

Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form is grown primarily for its variegated foliage, which is most colorful in spring and early summer. New growth often carries pink highlights, then opens into a lively mix of green and creamy white. As summer progresses, the foliage may soften to greener tones, especially in hotter conditions. Slender stems and slightly arching branch tips give the canopy a graceful, airy texture.

This willow is deciduous and drops its leaves in fall. Young stems can add reddish winter interest, particularly in cooler climates. Small spring catkins may appear, but the main ornamental feature is the foliage display and refined standard form. Regular pruning helps maintain a dense, rounded head and encourages fresh, colorful new growth. Use it as a specimen, accent tree, container feature, or bright foliage contrast in mixed shrub and perennial plantings.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant Hakura Nishiki Willow – Tree Form in full sun to partial shade with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a location with room for the rounded canopy to develop and keep the graft or trained trunk form visible above surrounding plants.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Established plants appreciate steady moisture during warm or dry periods, especially when grown in containers or exposed sunny sites.

3. Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and reduce weed competition. Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk to protect the bark.

4. Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to shape the canopy, remove damaged growth, and encourage fresh variegated shoots. Light touch-up trimming during the growing season can help maintain a tidy rounded form.
