New Horizon Elm Additional Information

New Horizon Elm produces small, inconspicuous spring flowers followed by typical elm samaras, though its primary ornamental value comes from its form, foliage, and shade. The leaves are medium to dark green through the growing season, creating a full canopy that provides welcome cooling shade in larger landscapes. In fall, foliage commonly shifts to yellow tones before dropping for winter dormancy.

This hybrid elm is well suited for street plantings, open lawns, public landscapes, park-like settings, and large residential properties. Young trees benefit from early structural training to encourage a strong central leader and well-spaced scaffold branches. Once established, New Horizon Elm is an adaptable shade tree, but it should still be planted with enough space away from buildings, overhead lines, and narrow planting strips so its mature structure can develop properly.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant New Horizon Elm in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil and plenty of space for mature canopy growth. Set the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding soil level, and avoid planting too deeply.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods, especially in hot, compacted, or exposed sites.

3. Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce competition from turf or weeds. Keep mulch pulled back several inches from the trunk.

4. Pruning: Prune young trees during dormancy to develop strong structure, remove crossing branches, and maintain a balanced framework. Mature trees generally need only occasional corrective pruning.
