Princeton Sentry Ginkgo

Princeton Sentry Ginkgo is a narrow, upright deciduous tree prized for distinctive fan-shaped leaves, brilliant golden fall color, and a tidy male form. Its refined vertical habit makes it excellent for sunny lawns, streetscapes, entry areas, and landscapes needing height without excessive spread.

Why choose Princeton Sentry Ginkgo?

Choose Princeton Sentry Ginkgo for the unique beauty of a ginkgo in a more space-conscious form. This cultivar offers upright, columnar to narrow pyramidal growth, making it easier to place than broader shade trees. Its fan-shaped foliage turns a vivid golden yellow in fall, creating a clean, memorable seasonal display. As a male selection, it is valued for avoiding the messy, strong-smelling fruit associated with female ginkgo trees, making it a polished option for residential and urban landscapes.

Key Characteristics

Botanical Name: Ginkgo biloba ‘Princeton Sentry’
Common Name: Princeton Sentry Ginkgo, Princeton Sentry Maidenhair Tree
Plant Type: Deciduous tree
Growth Habit: Upright, narrow pyramidal to columnar shade tree

Princeton Sentry Ginkgo Additional Information

Princeton Sentry Ginkgo is grown for its architectural form, distinctive foliage, and outstanding autumn color. The leaves are bright green through the growing season and have the classic fan shape that makes ginkgo instantly recognizable. In fall, they turn a rich golden yellow, often creating a striking seasonal carpet beneath the tree as they drop.

This cultivar is especially useful where a taller tree is desired but a broad canopy would be difficult to fit. It works well as a lawn specimen, formal accent, street tree, driveway planting, or vertical feature near larger buildings and open borders. Princeton Sentry Ginkgo is deciduous and reveals a clean branching structure in winter. It is typically slow to moderate growing when young, so careful placement and consistent early care help it establish into a long-lasting landscape tree.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant Princeton Sentry Ginkgo in full sun with well-drained soil and enough vertical space for its mature form. Set the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding grade, then backfill with native soil and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods, especially in hot, exposed, or fast-draining sites.

3. Mulching: Apply a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve soil moisture, reduce turf competition, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk.

4. Pruning: Prune young trees during dormancy to support a strong central leader and balanced branch spacing. Mature trees usually need only light corrective pruning to remove damaged, crossing, or poorly placed limbs.

FAQs

How large does Princeton Sentry Ginkgo get?
Princeton Sentry Ginkgo commonly matures around 40 to 50 feet tall with a narrower spread, often about 15 to 25 feet wide depending on growing conditions and available space.
What makes Princeton Sentry Ginkgo different from other ginkgo trees?
Its upright, narrow habit makes it easier to use in tighter landscapes than broader ginkgo selections. It also offers the same fan-shaped foliage and brilliant yellow fall color ginkgo trees are known for.
Is Princeton Sentry Ginkgo a male cultivar?
Yes. Princeton Sentry Ginkgo is grown as a male selection, which is preferred for landscapes because it does not produce the messy, unpleasant-smelling fruit associated with female ginkgo trees.
Where should I plant Princeton Sentry Ginkgo?
Plant it in a sunny, well-drained location where its vertical form and fall color can be appreciated. It works well along streets, driveways, large borders, entries, and open lawn areas.
