Homestead Elm Additional Information

Homestead Elm produces inconspicuous greenish flowers in spring, followed by small winged samaras. Its main ornamental value comes from its handsome canopy, strong branching, and dense green summer foliage. The leaves are oval, serrated, and medium to dark green through the growing season, then typically turn yellow to golden yellow in fall before dropping.

This elm is best used where it has room to mature into a large shade tree. It can work well along streets, in parks, beside large lawns, or in open landscape beds where its roots and canopy have adequate space. Young trees benefit from structural pruning to encourage a strong central framework and well-spaced branches. Because Homestead Elm can develop an extensive root system, it is best planted with thoughtful distance from pavement, foundations, and tight hardscape areas.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant Homestead Elm in full sun with well-drained soil and plenty of room for its mature canopy and root system. Set the root flare at or slightly above grade, then backfill firmly and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and maintain consistent moisture during establishment. Once established, Homestead Elm is reasonably adaptable, but supplemental watering during extended dry periods supports healthy foliage and steady growth.

3. Mulching: Apply a 2 to 3 inch mulch layer over the root zone to conserve moisture, reduce turf competition, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch pulled away from the trunk.

4. Pruning: Prune young trees to develop strong branch spacing and a balanced framework. Remove crossing, damaged, or poorly attached limbs during dormancy, and use light corrective pruning as the tree matures.
